Lisa Berkman, a social epidemiologist, is Director of the Center for Population and Development Studies and Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy and of Epidemiology at Harvard University. Dr. Berkman's work has focused on the social influences on health outcomes, especially on understanding the social inequalities in health related to socioeconomic status, racial and ethnic status, social networks, and social isolation. Her work is devoted primarily to identifying the role of social networks and support in predicting age-related changes in health, onset of disease, and mortality.
